The Association of Government Accountants (AGA) is accepting nominations for their annual National Leadership Awards. These awards honor federal, state and local officials or financial executives in the private sector who promote excellence in government financial management.
Below is an overview of the seven awards that will be presented, with the last three focused specifically on state and local government leaders.
Any individual or government unit may make a nomination. Nominees do not have to be AGA members. All award winners will be honored at the AGA’s National Leadership Training, to be held Feb. 23-24, 2016 in Washington, D.C.

Elmer Staats Award
Recognizes federal professionals who exemplify and promote excellence in government financial management, outstanding leadership, high ethical standards, and innovative management procedures. Honors the cumulative achievements of the individuals who throughout their career have served as a role model for others.
Distinguished Federal Leadership Award
Recognizes elected or presidentially-appointed federal officials who exemplify and promote excellence in government management and have demonstrated outstanding leadership in enhancing sound financial management legislation, regulations, practices, policies and systems.
Andy Barr Award
Recognizes financial executives in the private sector who exemplify and promote excellence in the federal government, outstanding leadership, high ethical standards, and innovative management techniques. Honors the cumulative achievements of the individuals who throughout their career have served as a role model for others.
Private Sector Financial Excellence Award
Recognizes a financial executive in the private sector who exemplifies and promotes excellence in state or local government financial management, outstanding leadership, high ethical standards and innovative management techniques. Honors the cumulative achievements of the individuals who throughout their career have served as a role model for others.
The following awards are focused on state and local government leaders in financial management:
Excellence in Government Leadership Award
Recognizes state/local government professionals who exemplify and promote excellence in government financial management, outstanding leadership, high ethical standards and innovative management procedures. Honors the cumulative achievements of the individuals who throughout their career have served as a role model for others.
William R. Snodgrass Distinguished Leadership Award
Recognizes state government professionals who exemplify and promote excellence in government financial management and who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in enhancing sound financial management legislation, regulations, practices, policies and systems.
Distinguished Local Government Leadership Award
Recognizes local government professionals who exemplify and promote excellence in government financial management and who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in enhancing sound financial management legislation, regulations, practices, policies and systems.
