Section on Professional & Organizational Development Scholarship Available

Each year, the Section on Professional and Organizational Development (SPOD) confers at least two (2) scholarships to the most deserving doctoral and master level students who are actively enrolled in the study of public affairs, public administration, public policy or public service at accredited institutions of higher learning.

The SPOD annual scholarships are designed to help facilitate learning to advance students’ academic work and interests in finding solutions to public organizational challenges. As well, the scholarships are intended to not only provide membership to introduce students to the work of SPOD but for the long-term to serve as a conduit for encouraging students to become involved in the various activities of the Section. These opportunities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Contributing manuscripts for review to Public Administration Quarterly, a widely read refereed journal by academics and practitioners alike;
  • Contributing articles of interest to the Section’s quarterly newsletter;
  • Assembling, coordinating and presenting on SPOD sponsored panels and workshops as practitioners, academics and pracademics;
  • Continuing sustained membership, commitment and demonstrated skills for grooming to leadership positions within the Section

For 2013, SPOD seeks applicants who are ready, willing and able to rise to this challenge. We therefore ask that you submit the following for consideration:

  1. Statement of Purpose. Why are you pursuing your current field of study? Are you currently a member of ASPA? Why are you applying for the SPOD scholarship? Why and what are your interest (s) in SPOD?  Please limit your response to 5 double spaced typewritten pages
  2. Curriculum vitae that speaks to your field of study and interest (s). Limit to 2 typewritten pages
  3. Two letters of recommendation:
  • One of the two letters must be from an active ASPA and/or SPOD member
  • One letter must be from an academic (i.e., your professor) who is from and/or is familiar with your academic program of study and has knowledge of your performance in the program as well as your interest (s)
  • An additional letter may be from a practitioner who has knowledge of your level of commitment to the field of study as a practitioner, for example

Please send your application package (s) to the attention of: G.L.A. Harris, Ph.D., Chair, Section on Professional and Organizational Development (SPOD) at [email protected] no later than Friday, February 15, 2013. Thank you.

      Hi Wesley,

      I’m not sure when the scholarship announcement will be made. You can contact Dr. Harris at [email protected] and she will be more than happy to answer your question.
