How innovative are you? In The Persistence of Innovation in Government, Sandford Borins maps the changing landscape of American public sector innovation in the twenty-first century. Borins identifies both shifts and continuities in public sector innovation over the last two decades. Learn how a growing trend towards interorganizational collaboration and external evaluation of public sector innovation has blossomed over the last two decades ago.

In this book talk, the author will also highlight the major shifts in the content of public sector innovation. In particular, thematic trends in various policy areas. Attendees will also learn about the considerable continuity in the process of innovation. Finally, explore the determinants of recognition (such as awards and media attention) for public sector innovations and get advice as a practitioner how to innovate successfully.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Sanford Borins, professor, University of Toronto & research fellow, Harvard Kennedy School

Sandford Borins is professor of Public Management at the University of Toronto. He is also a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. He has been a visiting professor at the Harvard Kennedy School (1993-94) and Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California at Berkeley (1999).

He is the author of numerous articles as well as ten books. The books include The Persistence of Innovation in Government (2014), Governing Fables: Learning from Public Sector Narratives  (2011), Political Management in Canada, co-authored with Hon. Allan Blakeney, former premier of Saskatchewan (1998), Innovating with Integrity: How Local Heroes are Transforming American Government (1998).

He was a member of the board of directors of the Ontario Transportation Capital Corporation, responsible for developing leading edge electronic toll road (Highway 407). He was the President of the Canadian Association of Programs in Public Administration (cappa.ca) – the Canadian counterpart to NASPAA – from 2003 to 2007.  He writes a blog about narrative, politics, and innovation at www.sandfordborins.com.

He did his undergraduate studies at Harvard, where he graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He then took a Master in Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government, and received his Ph.D. in Economics at Harvard University.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Michael J. Keegan hosts and produces the IBM Center’s The Business of Government Hour. He has interviewed and profiled hundreds of senior government executives from all levels of government as well as recognized thought leaders focusing on a range of public management issues and trends. Michael is also the managing editor of The Business of Government magazine.
