Not just a technological solution, “Big Data” really represents an explicit social demand for data. This widening realization that data is critical to better decisions has led to the development of powerful new technologies to collect and process data. These social and technical changes can potentially move society, if done correctly, much further in the direction of data-driven decision-making. This webinar will discuss how Big Data is different and what implications this has for academics, practitioners and public managers.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
David Landsbergen’s research examines the legal, policy and managerial challenges to obtaining quality information for public decision-making. He recently conducted a study with students on how Big Data might improve outcomes and costs for Ohio’s Healthcare systems.
Most recently, he completed a national study on the opportunities, costs and barriers of providing open data. The study included recommendations for both state and local government. His past work has focused on integrating information systems so that they are interoperable; making information systems secure and trustworthy; identifying best policy and managerial practices for open source software; providing recommendations on how to improve the standards-setting process; and designing policies and systems that protect privacy and improve public records access. As a John Glenn Scholar, he helped develop a Central Ohio response to the Digital Divide.
