The 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, had ordered an attack on Iran. The U.S. military had attacked several nuclear facilities that Iran had. These Iran nuclear facilities were located in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan. Prior to his presidential address to the nation, he had posted on Truth Social that a “full payload of bombs” were dropped on the main nuclear site of Fordo. All of the U.S. planes had made it out of Iran safely, he also mentioned. When Trump addressed the nation on Saturday, June 21st, he mentioned that the nuclear sites had been totally obliterated. He warned Iran about possibly striking back in return and told them that they should make peace with Israel. Trump made the promise that if Iran did not try to make peace with Israel, there would be more targets that could possibly be bombed. Iran has pledged that if the United States got involved with the conflict with Israel, they would retaliate. This all started on June 13th when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear and military sites. Iran responded with drone attacks on Israeli cities.
The Defense Department confirmed that American B-2 Spirit bombers had been used to strike the nuclear facilities. They were carrying GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators which could only be carried by B-2 Spirit bomb planes. Seven B-2s were sent from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri and dropped 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrators. General Dan Caine, who is chairman of the Joint Chiefs, also said that two dozen submarines had launched Tomahawk missiles at the nuclear site. International experts have stated that Iran’s nuclear program is based about 300 feet below the mountains and has air defenses surrounding and protecting the facility.
Earlier this week, multiple U.S. officials mentioned that Trump opposed Israel’s plans to kill the Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The U.S. alerted Israel after the strikes were conducted. Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke and afterwards, in a video address, Netanyahu commended the U.S. President for carrying out the strikes on Iran and their nuclear facilities. Iran and Russia have had a strong strategic partnership, and the Kremlin was fast to condemn the strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities because they thought the strikes were irresponsible and a violation of international law. The Kremlin also thought that this would increase the current conflicts going on in the Middle East. Homeland Security officials are now on high alert that something may happen, whether it might be physical or cyber reprisals from Iran. A U.S. intelligence official believes there could be an Iranian threat of some kind on the U.S. homeland. The U.S. is not sure how Iran will respond because this is the highest rate of conflict the U.S. has had in years. From a range standpoint, either Iran could respond very significantly or they might not do much.
Some of the U.S. lawmakers had mixed feelings about the strikes taking place. The House of Representatives Speaker was briefed on the strikes before they took place. He was one who supported the strikes on the Iranian nuclear facilities. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who has been a major supporter of President Trump, did not agree with the strikes. She did not like the U.S. getting involved with the Iran and Israel escalation. Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were very critical of the strikes because they both mentioned that the U.S. strikes took place without Congressional approval. Jeffries mentioned that President Trump misled the country by possibly now getting the U.S. in potential involvement with the conflict in the Middle East between Iran and Israel. Democratic Senator from Virginia Mark Warner said that President Trump campaigned on ending all of the foreign wars that are taking place. Now President Trump has possibly brought the United States into a war by getting involved with the conflict in the Middle East. The President did not consult with Congress and now does not have a clear strategy on what the next steps would be. He did not explain to the American people what could be at stake and did this strike without regard to the consistent conclusions of the intelligence community, mentioned Warner.
