According to new information released from the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM), in Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 the government employed the highest percentage of military veterans in over 20 years.
In the OPM report, Employment of Veterans in the Federal Executive Branch for Fiscal Year 2012, figures show that approximately 195,000 new employees were hired in FY 2012. Of that figure, 56,000 were veterans, which equaled 28.9 percent of total hires. In FY 2012, veterans represented 29.7 percent of the government workforce.
Compared to FY 2009—when President Obama signed Executive Order 13518, Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government, which established the Veterans Employment Initiative—these new figures show great promise. In that year, veterans were roughly 25.8 percent of the workforce. Contrasted with FY 2012 numbers, this represents a 4 percentage-point increase in 3 years.
