White House Calls For Action on National Security, Climate Change

In a statement released May 20, 2015, President Obama reiterated the growing national security threats of climate change. The president cited a new White House report that shows how extreme weather and a warming planet are creating new security threats and putting our military bases and personnel at risk.

This news confirms what many in the environmental community have longed argued—climate change poses clear danger to both our nation’s economy and security. According to Nicole Lederer, the chair of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), a nonpartisan group of business leaders, investors and others who promote smart environmental policies:

“This report shows clearly that taking aggressive action to fight climate change will reduce demands on our military to respond to national security risks at home and abroad. Addressing climate change will also create economic opportunity and jobs for veterans and hundreds of thousands of other Americans in the clean energy industry.”

Brigadier Gen. Steve Anderson (US Army –Ret.), a member of E2 who oversaw logistics in Iraq and Afghanistan stated, “This report is yet another confirmation of what most Americans intuitively know to be true: Climate change has profound effects on our national security and well-being… and it’s already happening.”
